Malta International Airport is celebrating 30 years since the inauguration of the present air terminal building. Originally designed to handle 2.5 million passengers, the terminal, which has evolved greatly along the years, saw a record 7.5 million passengers in 2019 alone. Being the point of entry for around 97% of tourists that visit Malta, Malta International Airport strives to curate excellent airport experiences that leave great first and last impressions of the islands on visitors.
Malta International Airport is now seeking to increase connectivity to the Maltese Islands by exploring new route development opportunities together with existing and potential partner airlines. A number of infrastructure projects that are in the pipeline, including the construction of a new apron, are geared towards supporting the airport’s recovery and eventual growth. |
Air Malta is primarily a point-to-point airline transporting mainly leisure-based customers to the Maltese Islands.The airline started operations as the national airline of Malta on the 1st April 1974 with 7 scheduled services across Europe and two wet-leased aircraft. The airline now operates a fleet of 7 Airbus A320 aircraft and flies to around 35^ scheduled destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. From just 52,000 passengers carried in its first year, the airline now carries 2 million^ passengers yearly and over the course of its history transported over 56 million passengers safely to and from Malta.Air Malta connects the Islands to Europe’s main airport hubs. In addition to its own network, the Airline offers an additional 150 destinations through code share agreements with several quality airlines. Approximately 80% of all passengers are incoming to Malta, with the majority of which for leisure purposes.
